5 Smartphone Apps to Use on Your Next Hiking Adventure
We are using our smartphones more and more while hiking to perform many tasks we used to reserve for multiple devices or hauling paper.
I’ll be looking at four iOS apps which I use pretty much at every hike, some have an Android version or you can find an equivalent.
I’m gonna plug our own app here. The NSTrails app is meant as a simple trail finder. It displays the actual GPS tracks as an overlay over satellite or roads maps from the default Maps application. The core function is to help you navigate to the trailhead. The app can use an update, but the app is the largest repository of hiking trails in Nova Scotia that you can find.
This great app is darn simple; Makes available offline the latest digital version of the Canadian topographic maps available via geogratis. The maps are the 50k version. An essential tool if you don’t have good paper maps. Another bare bones app.
This is the companion app when you are carrying a Delorme inReach communication device. The app allows you to pair via Bluetooth you smartphone and inReach so that you can compose your messages faster and view offline maps from Delorme. The map quality for Canada kinda weak as compared to the previously mentioned Canada app, but when hiking in the US, the maps are glorious.
Odds are you are also carrying a GPS along your hike. If you have select GPS models from Garmin, you’ll be able to transfer your track onto your phone and save it to the Garmin cloud. You can also transfer information from Garmin adventures to the GPS device to help you navigate. The only downside of the app is that you see your current location as a marker while reviewing a track.
You probably took a bunch of pictures along the hike. While smartphone cameras have improved greatly, you still need to tweek some of the images to make them look even better. This app from Google is dead simple to apply tweaks and filters to your images and allows you to share to common social apps.
Do you have a favorite app for hiking? Leave them in the comments!
