A Year of Careful Conservation
Beginning in May 2024, Baxter State Park embarked on an ambitious restoration effort to repair and preserve the historic cabins at Daicey Pond. To allow this work to proceed efficiently, the campground was closed to overnight guests from May 2024 through April 2025 .
Restoration, Not Renovation
This project wasn’t about modernizing these rustic buildings—it was about honoring their history. The Park’s focus was on restoring the cabins to their former glory while maintaining structural integrity. Enhancements include reducing drafts, improving durability, and preserving the overall look and feel that generations of visitors have cherished .

Why Act Now?
Many of the cabins—originally built by Maurice York in the early 1900s and meticulously reconstructed by Earle York Jr. and family mid-century—had reached a point where major intervention was necessary. Without restoration, several could have been lost entirely .
Full Closure for Fuller Impact
By closing the entire campground at once, the Park minimized disruption to visitors and the tranquility of the wilderness. This concentrated timeframe also proved to be the most practical and cost-effective approach .

Work Continues Despite Winter
The restoration crew—including Park carpenters and rangers—pressed on through winter weather. By late 2024 and early 2025, they had reconstructed roof structures, replaced logs, installed perma-chinking, and rebuilt floors and walls on multiple cabins .
Project Complete
As of May 2025, the Daicey Pond cabin restoration project has reached completion. Visitors can now again enjoy these beloved cabins, now refreshed and strengthened for years to come .
Why This Matters
- Cultural Preservation: This restoration honors a heritage dating back to Maine’s early sporting camps—and ensures these cabins endure.
- Enhanced Experience: Improved comfort and safety blend seamlessly with the cabins’ timeless character.
- Prudent Stewardship: A single, uninterrupted project phase minimized ecological and visitor impact.
What’s Next?
- Reservations: With the campground reopened, visitors can plan overnight stays at the freshly restored cabins.
- Day Use Access: Throughout the project, day use—including hiking and fishing—remained open, and will continue now that restoration is complete.
- Future Updates: Keep an eye on Baxter State Park’s “What’s New This Year” page for more news on other projects and opportunities to explore .
