When visiting the West Advocate entrance to Cape Chignecto Provincial Park, you have a 3, 5 & 9k hiking loops for day use visitors.
We took advantage of the low tide in the Bay of Fundy to hike almost 1.5km along the beach which is not the red sand of Blomindon which we can see in the distance, but rather the hard rock. We can also see some coal rocks. Joggins, a UNESCO site just 30 min drive from here, was the site of coal mining.
We talk about finding wilderness trails not far from the city, yet we don’t mention the Crowbar Hiking Trail system, just next to Porters Lake, barely a 20 min drive from downtown Halifax.
This was a 6k out & back along the Porters Lake & Spriggs Brook trail until the bridge to cross the stream.
Cape George Heritage Trails are a network of footpaths totalling 37kms about a half hour from Antigonish Nova Scotia. One of the first trails designed by local trail building guru Peter jackson, you park at the Cape George Heritage School along route 337.
Enjoyed three nights at Baxter State park at Daicey Pond at the Owl’s Nest (cabin #1).
We spent two days deep in the backcountry of Kejimkujik National Park placing the 4th and final geocaching series where park visitors can earn a patch & pins as they complete each series. Each series is composed of five locations that park users have to locate using a GPS.
The period between 1850 – 1940 was an interesting time around Kejimkujik Lake. The area was populated with logging mills, gold mines, hunting lodges and cabins. Today when we enter the park, we don’t see this part of history right away, especially since some of these locations are in less traveled sections of the park.
A great day of activities are shaping up over at Kejimkujik National Park & National Historic Site of Canada. The park is hosting their first geocaching challenge launch event on November 6th 2010 (GPS: N 44° 26.299 W 065° 12.964). This is a great opportunity to visit the park and to hike several trails in effort to earn a limited reward item.

This is part two of my previous post about the upcoming geocaching/hiking challenge at Kejimkujik National Park on November 6th 2010.
My second trip to the park was to finalize the geocache locations and to place the containers in five locations within the park. Event participants can then use their GPS to find them along the trail. Parks Canada policy restricts placing the containers to marked trails only. So this allows participants to enjoy the trails without having to go off-trail.
We spent 2 days paddling & portage across a series of lakes at Kejimkujik National Park in September. This was a special trip as it was the first time we’ve attempted this kind a multi-day paddle and an overnight in the backcountry. Our goal was to travel a partial route taken by the tent dwellers to Peskowesk Lake and to spend the overnight at the Yurt. It is the same structure we stayed at back in an earlier adventure, but they moved it 10 km down the road past Eel Weir.
