How to Update Firmware on a Garmin inReach Explorer

We will look at the simple process of updating the firmware on your Delorme inReach Explorer or SE.

First thing we need to do is to find our USB cable and plug it into our PC or mac. Now open up a web browser and login into your Delorme Portal.

Usually when you login, you will see on the right side of the homepage a message indicating that an update is ready for our device. Here we’ll click on the button to get to the firmware update screen.

At this point, if you have not done so, download and install the inReach sync application. Once installed you can open up the sync application.

If the sync application doesn’t recognize the plugged in inReach, you can unplug/plug it back into the USB port. Once the device is recongnized, it will do a quick scan for the firmware update.

To initiate the install process, just click on the sync icon on the right side of the app. This will download the update and prepare your device.

You might notice during the update that the screen will change and the LED will blick RED, then RED/GREEN when it is in the process of writing the firmware to the device. This might take up to 15 min, so sit back and wait for the process to stop.

Depending on the firmware update, you might have to press ENTER on the device to acknowledge the update. But wait! you are not done quite yet, you might get a device restart and/or sync. Once you see the sync application giving you the OK. you can unplug the device.

To verify that the firmware was properly installed, take your device and navigate to SETTINGS | ABOUT THIS DEVICE
