Activating Garmin inReach Explorer+ in Real-Time

I recorded a livestream where I activated the Garmin inReach Explorer+ in real-time. The activation process is the same for all current inReach models, including the SE+ and previous generation.

  • You need 2 emergency contacts, credit card and 20 minutes with your computer (includes 10 minutes to activate the device outside) to get setup with your inReach device.
  • You can skip activation and use the inReach as GPS only.
  • Delorme Topo Maps are pre-loaded but you can sync different maps on the inReach portal

30:50 – Manage Maps on Device (answer: use inreach portal & sync via desktop)
31:40 – Pairing inreach via bluetooth
39:00 – Downloading Maps on Smartphone

I got the Garmin Explorer+ and I’ll show you what the process is activating it on your account plus answer the typical questions I’ve encountered while talking about this latest generation of device.

  1. Need Credit card
  2. 2 Emergency contacts
  3. Your billing info
  4. Access to a computer
  5. 20 minutes (to activate the device and download the inReach Sync program)

Note that if you are adding another inreach to your account, you still need to apply a credit card to the device. Also you need to assign a new user to the device. The same user can’t be assigned to multiple devices.

You can bypass the activation to use the GPS functions. To activate the device, you should see the ACTIVATION icon on the screen. The wizard will guide you through the process, including displaying the IMEI and authorization code.

For best results, once you have added the deivce to your inreach account, take the device outside so that it can register via the satellites. This should take about 10 minutes.

Registration Process

Watch these videos to see the portion of activation where you didn’t see my computer screen. The process is basically the same, maybe the webpages are a bit different but here’s how it goes:

  1. Create inReach portal account
  2. Register your inReach, choose your country
  3. Enter your IMEI & authorization code
  4. Enter your 2 emergency contacts
  5. Choose your service plan
  6. Enter your credit card information
  7. Go outside with your inReach to finish the process
  8. Download the Sync application to your desktop to sync / update the firmware.

How to Export The Track Log From Your Garmin inReach Explorer

On your Delorme inReach Explorer, you have two types of track logs: the default 10 min track points that you can share with others using Mapshare and the 1 min detailed track log that you can view on the screen or using the Earthmate app.

But how can you export the detailed track log onto your computer in order to do some work with it? For example you want to make a topo map and add the trail detail, or even submit your track to openstreetmap.

How to Update Firmware on a Garmin inReach Explorer

We will look at the simple process of updating the firmware on your Delorme inReach Explorer or SE.

First thing we need to do is to find our USB cable and plug it into our PC or mac. Now open up a web browser and login into your Delorme Portal.

Garmin inReach Explorer – How to Send 2 Way Messages

We take a look how your can send 2-way email & mobile text messages with your Delorme inReach Explorer (and SE). Now, you can send messages using your paired smartphone and using the Earthmate app, but for this video we will use the inReach as a stand alone device.

But before we start using our inReach to send a message, we need to first setup a few items in our Delorme portal.

Charging up Devices Before & During a Hike

It happens that when you are driving out to a trailhead for a hike, you may forget to charge up all of your devices. This video is about how you can top up your devices while driving and in the field. Here I have my typical devices; garmin fenix, delorme inreach explorer and iPhone 5s. All of them have about 50% power left. I happen to have my Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar panel and Guide 10 Battery pack as backup.

Garmin inReach Explorer – Calibrating Compass & Altimeter

We go over the steps to calibrate the Delorme inReach Explorer electronic compass and altimeter.

The Delorme inReach Explorer contains an electronic compass and barometric altimeter. To calibrate both items, go to the SETTINGS page and scroll down to COMPASS & ALTIMETER

From here you can calibrate the compass & altimeter.

Garmin inReach Explorer – Geocaching

In this video, we’ll show you how to load geocache waypoints on your Delorme inReach Explorer.

Now we can enter manually waypoint information, but we want to load up multiple geocaches into our device. To help us do that, we need to create a GPX file that will contain these multiple geocaches or waypoints.

Plot Coordinates on a Map With Garmin inReach Explorer

We will take a quick look at how we can take coordinates from our current location or saved waypoints on our Delorme inReach SE or Explorer.
